As the Trump administration struggles to find an off-ramp to the Iran war, Tehran is flexing it muscles by keeping the Strait of Hormuz closed unless its terms are met. But is Iran overplaying its hand?
The business world can’t tolerate this on-again, off-again uncertainty over whether they can move their cargo, so they will seek other avenues. Oil, in particular, can be rerouted to safe harbors with new pipelines. Shippers very likely have contingency plans already in motion. Once those new routes are established, Iran loses its key economic weapon, so they would be well-advised to stop stringing Donald Trump along and make a favorable deal now that opens up the strait.
