Police say man with felony warrant forced woman out of west Omaha home at gunpoint
OMAHA, Neb. —
The Omaha Police Department is investigating the death of a man who police said died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a barricade situation on Sunday evening.
Police said officers were patrolling near 40th and Cuming streets when they spotted a vehicle driven by 44-year-old Daniel Read, who had confirmed warrants. The Omaha Police helicopter was deployed to the area, and officers observed the vehicle going 100+ mph before stopping near 144th and Shirley streets.
Read fled on foot and unlawfully entered a nearby home. Inside, Read threatened the homeowner with a firearm, but the homeowner managed to escape to safety.
Omaha police say negotiations via text messages between Read and Omaha Police SWAT and crisis negotiators went on for about three hours. OPD said at the end of the conversation, officers heard multiple gunshots coming from inside the home.
OPD used a drone to see inside the residence and found Read dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
“The Omaha Police Department offers its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Read during this difficult time,” the department said.
No one else was injured in the incident, and no officers fired their weapons.
Investigators are treating the case as an in-custody death, and a grand jury convene to look into the case, per state law.
The Omaha Police Department, the Nebraska State Patrol and the Papillion Police Department are jointly investigating.
