LOGAN SQUARE — An armed man barricaded himself inside of a house in Logan Square, causing an hours-long standoff with police.
Witnesses and police at the scene told Block Club that an armed man had taken refuge in a house in the 3400 block of West Wrightwood Avenue in Logan Square after a domestic disturbance brought police to the scene late Monday morning.
A police officer at the scene told Block Club that the suspect released a hostage to first responders but was still refusing to leave the premises. Police negotiators could be heard pleading with a man to leave the house.
A police department spokesperson did not confirm the nature of the standoff as of Sunday afternoon. Mayor Lori Lightfoot lives on the block where the barricade situation unfolded.
By 2 p.m. Monday, SWAT teams had surrounded the building and closed off a stretch of North Kimball and West Wrightwood avenues.
Resident Morgan Beatty said the standoff has being going on longer than she anticipated.
“We came home like I think around 11 [a.m.], and then we heard a lot of sirens, you know, which is typical,” she said. “But we get home and there’s a SWAT team. I’ve been surprised by how long the standoff has gone. It’s been like pretty much the whole afternoon.”

A neighbor familiar with the suspect said he was a caretaker for an older woman. The neighbor, who preferred to stay anonymous for safety reasons, alleged the suspect was working on a personal project inside of his home.
The suspect boarded himself into his home by nailing plywood boards to the inside of his window, police at the scene told Block Club.
Trained negotiators were attempting to get the suspect to leave his home “with his hands empty” for hours on Sunday afternoon. Around 5 p.m., police deployed less-lethal weapons onto the suspect’s home.
The CTA’s No. 82 Kimball/Homan buses were temporarily rerouted during the event Monday, according to ABC 7.
