Joel Colwill rescued a point for Cardiff City against Stoke City as the Bluebirds’ winless Championship run stretched to six matches despite a dominant display from the home side.

Cardiff fell behind midway through the first half at Cardiff City Stadium when Ben Johnson pounced on a defensive error to put the visitors ahead, despite the hosts having started brightly and creating several promising openings.

Ollie Tanner had already struck the post inside the opening eight minutes after good interplay involving Jack Moylan and Yousef Salech, before he was presented with another opportunity when Stoke goalkeeper Viktor Johansson made an error. Tanner’s attempt from a difficult angle, however, drifted wide.

Cardiff continued to threaten without making their pressure count. Chris Willock saw a shot blocked after Tanner had created the opening, while another promising attack ended with Moylan unable to get his effort away.

Stoke then punished the Bluebirds in the 23rd minute. Robert Bozenik lofted a ball over Joel Bagan, who was unable to shepherd it back towards Nathan Trott, with the goalkeeper also hesitant as Johnson barged past the Cardiff full-back before slotting into the net.

The hosts went into half-time behind, but emerged with greater attacking intent after the interval.

Trott was forced into an important save early in the second half, spreading himself to deny George Hirst after Gabriel Osho had lost his footing and left Cardiff exposed.

At the other end, Cardiff finally found their reward in the 63rd minute.

Willock floated a cross into the area and Joel Colwill produced an excellent header, directing the ball beyond Johansson and in off the post to level the scores.

Cardiff might have gone on to win it. Colwill narrowly missed with another diving header moments later, while Yousef Salech squandered a big chance after being played through by Alex Robertson.

Johansson then denied Salech in a one-on-one after Moylan had sent the striker clear, before the Stoke goalkeeper produced another good save to keep out Bagan’s effort.

The visitors’ goal continued to lead a charmed life late on, with Moylan seeing a deflected shot strike the post in the 90th minute.

Salech had one final opportunity in stoppage time when he met a Bagan cross, but his header was straight at Johansson.

The result means Cardiff remain without a Championship victory after six matches, with Barry-Murphy’s side having now taken four points from their opening six league games.

There were encouraging signs in the second-half response, but Cardiff’s inability to turn pressure and chances into victories remains a growing concern.
