Senior White House officials have reportedly privately warned President Donald Trump that the war with Iran could continue for the rest of his presidency. Despite his public prediction that the conflict will end soon after this year’s midterm elections.

Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio joined the private discussions in the Oval Office and the Situation Room, according to The Wall Street Journal. They told Trump that Iran could keep resisting American pressure for years, possibly pushing the war past the next presidential inauguration in January 2029.
The gap between the two positions is striking. The president recently claimed that Iran will fold quickly, while his own national security team plans for a much longer fight. That mismatch raised eyebrows because it shapes everything from troop deployments to oil markets to how Washington sells the war to a skeptical public.
Additionally, Donald Trump doubled down on his prediction Wednesday that the war with Iran could end immediately after the midterm elections. He told reporters that he believes Iran is prolonging the conflict because of the upcoming vote and said gas prices could fall once the elections are over. “They can’t hold out any longer,” Trump said. “They’re desperate to try and affect the election so that we can get a nice, weak group of people in there and leave them alone and let them have their nuclear weapons.”
Trump has said diplomacy remains possible, although he has indicated that negotiations are not his preferred path. Meanwhile, fighting has continued to escalate. The United States recently destroyed five Iranian oil tankers after Iran targeted a U.S. warship with missiles, according to Reuters. Iran subsequently attacked 10 ships and also fired ballistic missiles toward a U.S. military base in Jordan, according to the report.
The war began February 28 with Operation Epic Fury, launched alongside Israel under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to pressure Iran over its nuclear program. It was said that it would end in 2 weeks, but it’s been almost 6 months, and now reportedly it will stretch till Trump’s end of term.
