MS NOW’s Morning Joe crew joined hands in an impromptu prayer, led by panelist Rev. Al Sharpton, for Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) after host Joe Scarborough mocked his “really weird” speech at the GOP’s midterm convention.
Scott delivered some of the convention’s most animated attacks on Democrats on Wednesday night, repeatedly bringing the crowd to its feet as he cast the midterms as a battle for the country’s identity and branded the opposition slate “the most dangerous, radical and frankly weird Democratic candidates in American history.”
The senator singled out Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico for particular ridicule.
“He believes God is non-binary,” Scott declared. “He thinks God needs special woke pronouns. But Texas, we know who God is! We’re talking about Jeeeeezusss!”
But Scott saved some of his biggest theatrics for his warning about what a Democratic victory would mean for the country.
“The Democrats’ extreme candidates won’t rip that heart out of chests,” Scott said, dramatically miming his heart being torn from his body. “They hate our culture. They hate what it means to be American. Hear me, Dallas. Not! On! Our! Watch! We will not back down. We will not grow weary.”
Rolling back a clip of the theatrics, Scarborough reacted on Thursday morning, trolling Scott.
“Wow. You know, speaking of weird,” he said. “That was really weird. I thought for a moment there. You need some anti-seizure medication. I was concerned, and the whole ripping the heart out of the chest and Democrats hate America and American culture.”
“No, no they don’t,” he countered. “But they are genuinely worried about you, Tim. Really worried about you, Tim.”
Pivoting to Sharpton for a take on Scott’s speech, Scarborough asked: “What was he doing? What was he doing there? Do you have any idea what Tim Scott was doing there?”
“Well, first we should all join hands and pray for him,” Sharpton said, before Scarborough mockingly gestured for everyone around the table to actually do so.
“Here, everybody, come on, hold the Rev’s hand,” Scarborough said. “Rev, lead us in prayer.”
Sharpton began: “Tim Scott needs an intersection. Amen. He needs an interception and intersection.”
“Intersection!” co-host Mika Brzezinski quipped to laughter.
“Because he is really out there,” Sharpton concluded. “Bring him back in, Lord.”
“Thank you, baby Jesus. Thank you, baby Jesus, all right,” Scarborough said as everyone sat up again.
Sharpton offered his reaction: “I am actually praying. I’m actually praying.”
“That was rough,” Scarborough agreed.
“To go that far, I mean, I understand you have to kiss the ring, I understand that you bowed to Trump, but the way he really went off the chain, you’ve got to really wonder about where he is in his head. And this is, overcompensation is too light a term, this is – I’ve never seen anything like that in national politics,” Sharpton said, musing that someone would only act that way while “facing a firing squad.”
