As long as a football is in the hands of Montini quarterback Israel Abrams, anything is possible.

Abrams, a Miami recruit, proved that over and over at Nazareth on Friday night as he kept bringing the Broncos back.

“I don’t lose faith,” he said. “We made adjustments at halftime, and the energy shifted. Credit the coaches, and credit all my receivers. Those guys can play.”

So can Abrams, whose seventh touchdown lifted Montini to a wild 47-42 win.

Abrams passed for 412 yards and four TDs, including the go-ahead 33-yard pass to Damacio Ortegon with 34 seconds left, and also ran for three TDs.

It was big play after big play, and the Broncos (3-1), who are No. 11 in the Chicago Tribune’s rankings, needed every one of them to hold off No. 21 Nazareth (1-3) as quarterback JJ Chapman threw for 301 passing yards and three scores.

Montini’s defense struggled at times but made critical stops in the second half. Orlando Greco’s interception sealed it with 10 seconds left.

“At the end of the day, we got the win, and the defense made the stops when they had to,” Abrams said.

The game could not have started any better for Montini as the Roadrunners turned the ball over on their first two possessions. The Broncos capitalized on each miscue with a touchdown for a 13-0 lead less than four minutes into the game.

The first turnover, Andrew Chrastka’s interception, gave Montini the ball near midfield. On the next play, Abrams rolled to his left and heaved a 51-yard strike to Ortegon for the first score with 9:25 left in the first quarter.

The Roadrunners then fumbled the ball on their first play after the kickoff, and Greco recovered it at the 5-yard line. That set the stage for Abrams’ 2-yard TD run.

Nazareth’s offense shook off the rough start and responded with a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter and another in the second quarter to take a 21-20 lead.

The Roadrunners threatened again right before halftime, but linebacker Johnny Louise made a big fourth-and-1 stop at Montini’s 10-yard line in the final minute.
