Teen dead after crash in Portland
Authorities say two others were injured in the crash on Warren Avenue.
PORTLAND, Maine —
A teen is dead and two others are injured after a crash on Warren Ave. in Portland.
Authorities say a group of teens was walking towards Riverside St. near the I-95 overpass Saturday night when a vehicle being driven by a 48-year-old man from Portland was driving in the same direction. Investigators believe the group went onto the roadway abruptly and three teens were hit by the vehicle.
Officials say a 13-year-old died from his injuries at the scene. A 14-year-old and a 15-year-old were taken to Maine Medical Center. Authorities say they have serious but not life-threatening injuries.
The Superintendent of Portland Public Schools confirming the group included three students from Deering High School. He says the student who died was a peer from a neighboring community. He also says support teams including counselors and social work providers will be ready and available Monday morning to support students affected.
Officials are investigating the incident. They say the driver is cooperating with the investigation, and no charges have been filed yet. The area was closed for about five hours during the incident.
