The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Atlanta Falcons, 20-13, Sunday with T.J. Watt leading the way. Watt got off to a blazing start to the season with two sacks and an interception, which he returned for a touchdown. Watt’s excellent showing did not surprise his former head coach at all.

“I’m used to seeing it, to be quite honest with you. But it doesn’t mean that it’s not spectacular,” Mike Tomlin said on NBC’s Football Night In America. “This guy has got 10 career picks, I’m telling you it happens almost on a routine basis, that you don’t even throw screens his way in training camp, because that’s the end result.”

Watt’s interception certainly was impressive. He read the play beautifully. Knowing he’s not going to get to Cooper Rush before the pass, he has the instincts to realize when the ball is coming his way. He gets his hands up just in time, and even though he falls down after making the interception, he still has the wherewithal to get up and return for a score.

Many edge rushers can impact the game with sacks, but to Tomlin, Watt is also special because of his intangibles.

“What you can’t measure, is his instincts and feel for the game. That’s what produces plays like that. This guy is in elite company, man,” Tomlin said. “I’m telling you, people in Pittsburgh take it for granted…He delivers for ’em, as usual.”

Watt didn’t just have that interception on the day. His two sacks were important as well. Seeing more one-on-one matchups given the way the Steelers sent blitzes and rotated their front seven, Watt was able to take advantage.

In a lot of ways, this felt like a game the Steelers might have won under Tomlin. The Steelers played a team they were supposed to beat a little too close, but they capitalized on Atlanta’s mistakes, and Watt came up with a game-changing play in the second half.

That’s a tune that rings very familiar to Tomlin, who spent almost a decade with Watt. While there’s a lot for Pittsburgh to clean up going forward, the Steelers have got to feel happy with how their outside linebackers looked on Sunday, Watt especially.
