50,000 in Cary and Morrisville impacted by water main break along NC 55; Cary schools dismiss early :: WRAL.com

A large water main break is impacting 50,000 customers in Cary and Morrisville on Monday morning.

Many Cary schools will dismiss early on Monday as a precaution because water pressure levels at more than 20 schools were impacted by the break. See below for a full list of schools dismissing early. 

The town of Cary said the 30-inch water main break occurred in the early hours of the morning, impacting “roughly 50,000” customers in the “central pressure zone.”

The town reported N.C. Highway 55 is closed in both directions
between the Jenks Road/Old Jenks Road intersection and the Lewey
Drive/Turner Creek Road intersection. As of 10 a.m., NCDOT does not expect the stretch of road to reopen until noon.

Customers affected by the water main break are advised to boil their water vigorously for one minute before using it for drinking, cooking or brushing teeth. Bottled water can also be used.

“Low water pressure can create conditions that may allow bacteria to enter the water system,” the town of Cary wrote. “No harmful bacteria have been detected in the water system.”

Before 3 a.m., multiple viewers wrote to WRAL News, reporting low water pressure or no water in the town of Cary.
