CLATSOP COUNTY, Ore. (KPTV) — A four-car crash on Highway 30 left one man dead and injured 16 others Saturday night, including 13 Oregon National Guard members returning from a weekend training drill, authorities said.
The crash happened around 8:56 p.m. on Sept. 12 near milepost 85. State police said a westbound Ford Ranger pickup crossed into oncoming traffic and sideswiped a Ram 1500 before hitting an eastbound passenger van carrying 11 Guard members. A second pickup following behind was unable to stop and hit both the van and the oncoming truck.
The driver of the Ford Ranger, 65-year-old Markham Marshall Stangland of Warrenton, died at the scene. Investigators believe he was not wearing a seatbelt.
The van was driven by 21-year-old Spc. Haiden Cunningham of Milwaukie, who suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital. The drivers of the other two trucks, Jaden Vinay Govindan, 25, of Aloha, and Gregory Louis Wavra, 29, of Longview, Washington, were also taken to hospitals with minor injuries.
In total, 17 people were involved in the crash, prompting a mass-casualty response from multiple regional emergency agencies. Highway 30 was closed for about four hours.
Lt. Col. Stephen Bomar, public affairs director for the Oregon Military Department, confirmed Monday that Cunningham serves in the Oregon National Guard. The soldiers were traveling back to the Clackamas area following training at Camp Rilea near Warrenton.
“This was a horrible accident resulting in an individual’s death and multiple injuries to all involved to include 13 Oregon National Guard members,” Bomar said, noting that three Guard members remained hospitalized as of Monday afternoon.
