Bear attacks 17-year-old girl while inside her bedroom in Durango
DURANGO, Colo. —
A bear entered the bedroom of a 17-year-old girl in Durango, Colorado, early Sunday morning and attacked her while she was asleep, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials say the bear ripped the window screen off and was able to open a cracked window and entered the room. The bear ripped down a curtain and woke up the teenager who was sleeping.
Officials say the woman told officers she pulled blankets up and tried to hide when she saw the bear enter the room. The bear then sniffed around the room. The teenager then made a noise and she told officials the bear swiped at her and she felt the bear’s paw hit her stomach.
The bear then left the room after the teenager screamed and sat up. The bear then re-entered the room and exited after the teen continued to yell. The bear never returned.
Wildlife managers said the teenager had three scratch marks and bruising on her stomach where the bear swiped at her.
“Based on what we know happened in this encounter, the woman is very lucky she had multiple blankets covering her when the bear swiped her,” said District Wildlife Manager Luke Clancy.
Parks and Wildlife officials say the bear also entered another residence nearby on Monday morning.
Officials are still searching for the bear.
