2 Sacramento deputies shoot suspected carjacker after chaotic pursuit, sheriff’s office says
ARDEN-ARCADE, Calif. —
A suspected carjacker is in the hospital after a pursuit that resulted in two deputies shooting him Friday morning, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said.
Sgt. Edward Igoe, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, said the agency’s communications center got a call around 5:20 a.m. from a woman who said her husband’s car was being burglarized at their home near Hesper Way and Coyle Avenue.
The woman was at work but saw the burglary unfold from her surveillance camera and called her husband, who went outside to confront the person, Igoe said. During a fight with the suspected carjacker, the husband tried fleeing, but the person chased after the husband and took the keys to his pickup truck and drove away.
Igoe said deputies located the stolen pickup truck near Manzanita and Madison avenues and tried to pull the driver over, but he did not stop, prompting a chase. Deputies first tried a PIT maneuver to disable the car, but it did not work, and he kept going.
Deputies then tried to spike strip the pickup truck, but it kept going, forcing deputies to try a second PIT maneuver that succeeded in stopping the vehicle at Watt and Edison avenues, Igoe said. As deputies got out of their vehicles to try to get the suspected carjacker out of the pickup truck, he managed to restart the vehicle and drove over the center median toward deputies.
Igoe said this is when two deputies opened fire at the suspected carjacker, with at least one bullet hitting him. Deputies tried giving him medical aid before having him sent to the hospital, where his condition is unknown.
No deputies were injured, Igoe said. The suspected carjacker’s identity is unknown, only that he is male. There was also no indication that he was armed, but Igoe emphasized that vehicles can be used as deadly weapons.
The intersection of Watt and Whitney avenues is blocked while investigators are at the scene. Igoe anticipates the closure will be for a few hours.
