Tottenham fell to a 3-2 defeat Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon and here are our Spurs player ratings.

Spurs came into the match without a goal or win in the Premier League this season and while they changed the first of those problems, they were hit by a series of sucker punches throughout the game.

De Zerbi made just one change from the team that drew with Everton the previous weekend in the Premier League, with Pedro Porro replacing Archie Gray at right-back. However, he lost Porro just after a quarter of an hour to injury with Gray called back into the fray.

The hosts forced Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki into four saves in the opening 20 minutes. Savio had a double effort inside the box before Gray’s low shot was diverted across the face of goal by the stopper. From the subsequent corner, Savio struck a wonderful volley that was pushed aside by the Japan international.

Villa hit their hosts with a sucker punch in first half stoppage time. With Spurs down to 10 men as with Micky van de Ven getting treatment for a cut under his right eye, Andy Robertson stopped a ball from going out for a Villa corner and it was worked back to Boubacar Kamara, whose shot was poked into the net by Johan Manzambi.

Spurs looked dazed at the start of the second half but thought half-time substitute Mohammed Kudus had scored their first goal of the Premier League season from a yard out but VAR found Andy Robertson to be just offside in the build-up from Sandro Tonali’s pass.

Villa’s second goal came about through awful defending from Spurs. It was all too easy for Nicolas Jackson as first Jan Paul van Hecke stood off him to allow him to head the ball to Manzambi and then from his pass back, the former Chelsea man beat Van de Ven with no real difficulty and even his low strike was helped into the net by Antonin Kinsky.

It became 3-0 with just over 10 minutes to go as Emiliano Buendia smashed in a shot from distance under very little pressure.

Spurs had a late fightback with Conor Gallagher finally scoring their first goal of the Premier League season before Van Hecke headed home a second with almost the last touch of the game but it was nowhere near enough.

Here are our Tottenham player ratings after the game:

Antonin Kinsky

Made a couple of first half saves before a brave one-vs-one stop to deny Jackson early in the second period, taking a whack to the face in doing so. Could have been better in his communication with Robertson before Manzambi’s goal and didn’t get the strongest of hands to Jackson’s shot. Buendia’s effort from distance was just too good for him. 5

Pedro Porro

Started the game with a couple of good balls over the top but immediately knew he had injured what looked to be his ankle 15 minutes or so in and pounded the turf in frustration. N/A

Jan Paul van Hecke

After recent impressive performances this was a poor one from the Dutchman. He looked a step behind at times and wasn’t aggressive enough in his defensive work. Was so weak for Villa’s second as he stood off Jackson and then could only watch Manzambi play the ball back to the former Chelsea man. Headed home his first goal for the club in the 97th minute which bumps his score up by one. 4

Micky van de Ven

Started the game well and took a big hit in the face before the break that left him blooded under his right eye. Was beaten too easily by Jackson for Villa’s second and wasn’t able to rouse his team-mates. Sent a later header wide from a Maddison cross. 5

Andy Robertson

Put in some good crosses going forward, including the one from which he was just offside for Kudus’ disallowed effort. Kept the ball in play for the first Villa goal when with hindsight letting it go for the corner was the better option. Got a late assist for Van Hecke’s goal. 6

Rodrigo Bentancur

Terrific in the first half but his influence waned as his energy did in the second half. 7

Sandro Tonali

Made a good early run down the left that ended with Savio’s double chance. Like Bentancur, had a strong first half but wasn’t dominant enough in the second. 6

Savio

Hit two shots in a row at Suzuki 10 minutes in. Played in Gray for a chance and from the ensuing corner, hit a wonderful volley when it was headed his way that the Villa keeper pushed away at full stretch. Ran out of influence in the second half along with much of the team. 6

Mateus Fernandes

Only got the first 45 minutes and did well enough but was sacrificed at the break for Kudus. His departure didn’t help the team at all. 5

Omar Marmoush

Threatened to make something happen but never did. 5

Dominic Solanke

A couple of helpful defensive moments but as a striker had a poor day. He even looked surprised that Tonali’s early cross reached him in the box. Looked lumbering and off the pace until he was taken off. 3

Subs

Archie Gray

Linked up well with Savio after coming on and had a shot saved by the keeper. Was part of a poor defence in the second half. 5

Mohammed Kudus

Off the pace when he came on for the second half. Thought he’d scored on the hour mark from a yard but Robertson had been offside in the build-up. He only really came to life late on and set up Gallagher to score with his first real run past someone. 6

James Maddison

Some bright moments going forward and one good tackle in the centre of the pitch but he turned his back on Buendia’s shot and, while a great shot, it flew right where he would have been. 6

Conor Gallagher

Scored Tottenham’s first goal of the Premier League season and brought more energy to their play than most of the others combined in the second half. 7

Lucas Bergvall

Pushed the tempo up after coming on with Gallagher. 6
