A weeklong search for a British mother of two who was abducted in Malawi has ended with her dramatic rescue by police. Authorities say 47-year-old auditor Nusrat Osman, who was seized outside her home in Blantyre last Friday, was freed Thursday after officers got into a shootout with her alleged kidnappers, reports the Guardian. At least two suspects were killed and a police officer was wounded, per the AP. Two other suspects are still at large.
Osman is safe and “not too shaken,” her brother tells the UK Sun. The circumstances of the abduction remain under investigation. Osman, a native of Leicester, has lived and worked in the African nation for several years. Kidnappings are uncommon in Malawi, where rising crime is more often linked to theft and burglary. Authorities had offered a reward of about $17,000 for information, but have not said if tips led them to Osman.
