JOHNSON COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) – A missing student’s body was recovered from Lake Macbride on Wednesday, one day after an incident also resulted in the death of a teacher. Both victims have been officially identified by authorities.
The student has been identified as 10-year-old Ahmed Osman of Iowa City. Osman was a fifth-grade student at Bourlaug Elementary.
The adult victim’s body was recovered after noon on Tuesday. The victim, identified as 24-year-old Hannah Jorgensen of Tiffin, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Each victim were recovered from the Coralville Reservoir.
The Iowa City Community School District said the incident involved a Borlaug Elementary 5th grade School of the Wild trip.

A photo obtained from the Iowa City Community School District website confirms Jorgensen was a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary.
The school district issued a statement in response on Wednesday.
“The Iowa City Community School District is heartbroken to share an update regarding the tragic accident that occurred during a Borlaug Elementary fifth-grade School of the Wild field trip at the MacBride Nature Recreation Area on September 22, 2026.
Hannah Jorgensen, a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary, and Ahmed Osman, a fifth-grade student at Borlaug Elementary, lost their lives as a result of the accident.
Hannah and Ahmed were deeply valued members of our school district community, and their loss is being felt throughout Borlaug and across our district. Our hearts are with their families and loved ones, as well as Hannah’s colleagues and students, Ahmed’s classmates and friends, and everyone who knew and cared for them.
Counselors and additional support personnel will continue to be available at Borlaug Elementary in the days ahead. We know grief looks different for every person, and our focus will be on caring for our students and staff and giving them the time, space, and support they need.
We are grateful to the first responders and agencies who responded to this tragedy and worked tirelessly throughout the search and recovery efforts. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office continues to lead the investigation.
This is an extraordinarily painful time for the Borlaug community and our entire school district. We will continue to come together, care for one another, and keep Hannah, Ahmed, and their families at the center of our hearts in the difficult days ahead.”
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating how each victim got into the water.
Future School of the Wild trips have been canceled.
