The Toronto Maple Leafs preseason has concluded as their second series of split squad games were completed against the Ottawa Senators. After losing both games against the Montreal Canadiens, they won both against the Senators.
These preseason games serve as a tune-up for the start of the regular season. Even though you don’t want to try and draw too many conclusions from them, they’re still important in terms of who impressed and who didn’t. Whether it was a veteran, newcomer or a rookie, there were a number of players that really stood out and showed that they’re ready for the season to start. Here are five Maple Leafs players that made a strong impression during the preseason.
Gavin McKenna
It was only his first two pro games, but Gavin McKenna looked really confident, fitting in well on the second line with John Tavares and William Nylander. He got an assist in his second game, was easily the main play driver and was often a step ahead of his linemates with his creativity and skill. At times, it looked like they couldn’t keep up. His pace of offensive play and playmaking vision really made him dangerous as he was connecting with everyone.

There were some hiccups, but that’s expected as a rookie. He did his job and that was to be an offensive dynamo and creator. As he continues to get comfortable, build his strength and have that consistency away from the puck, he’ll continue to impress.
Auston Matthews
Many are wondering what a healthy Auston Matthews can do this season. He said that this is the greatest he has felt in some time, which was great, but seeing him on the ice provided that reassurance. He was productive with a goal and three assists in the two games, but I don’t remember seeing Matthews be as lightning quick with his skating as he was. He was flying on the rush and was weaving his way through defenders with ease. Call it the itch to get back, but considering he needed surgery on his MCL, a bounce back season is definitely in the cards. His shot is definitely going to be a problem for goaltenders again.
Jack Roslovic
Last season, finding a winger that can play alongside and be productive with Matthews was problematic as he had a revolving door of linemates. The signing of Jack Roslovic was certainly something to look forward to as he had chemistry with Matthews back when they were with the NTDP. In both games, Roslovic was really showing that chemistry even though they haven’t played together in years. He was working some great passing plays, give-and-go’s and creating that space for Matthews to shoot. He was creating offense and getting rewarded for it as well.

Chris Tanev
The shutdown play of Chris Tanev was sorely missed last season. Like Matthews, now that he’s back to being healthy, he can once again be a shutdown, breakout force that he’s known for. He was breaking up plays very well and his timing was perfect. He kept everything to the outside, took time and space away from opposing shooters. The chemistry with Jake McCabe still remains as they continue to get the heavy assignments. Matthews took note and it definitely showed in his return.
Morgan Rielly
No one needed a fresh start more than Morgan Rielly. Even though he played in one game, he really looked more involved and was determined to make an impact. He scored off a nice shot to make it 5-1 against the Senators. He was more mobile, had more jump and looked steadier defensively. It was one game, but if Rielly can build off that that would be a great start for him as he rebounds back.
