CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Heartland News) – An investigation is underway after a shooting in downtown Cape Girardeau overnight left a child dead and multiple adults injured.
According to Ptlm. Bobby Newton with the Cape Girardeau Police Department, officers were patrolling the downtown area at around 2 a.m. on September 27 when they heard multiple gunshots on N. Main Street.
Ptlm. Newton said officers found a juvenile and an adult with gunshot wounds. They were both taken to an area hospital.
Hospital staff said the juvenile later died at the hospital, and two additional adult victims arrived at the hospital with gunshot wounds.
At this time, no arrests have been made.
Your Heartland News Team was at the scene and saw several evidence markers along the sidewalk, multiple police cars and officers investigating, and blood on the ground in front of a business.
Main Street is currently blocked off between Themis and Independence.
We reached out to Cape Girardeau County Coroner Craig Williams. He said the identity of the victim will not be released to the public at this time, but an autopsy is scheduled for later this week.
The Cape Girardeau/Bollinger County Major Case Squad is investigating the incident.
