Two teenagers from Guelph have been charged with second degree murder in a case that saw a 16-year-old pedestrian killed in a crash with a minivan.
On Saturday, Sept. 19, shortly after midnight, the young teen from Puslinch was fatally struck by the van on Wellington Road 29 south of Eramosa-Garafraxa Town Line, just outside of Fergus.
Police said the driver of the involved minivan stayed at the scene of the crash.
In the days following the tragic collision, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) told CityNews Kitchener investigators were aware of information on the cause of the crash being shared online, and were warning against unverified information being posted.
“We are asking members of the public to refrain from sharing or posting any unverified information, photos or videos related to this case,” said OPP spokesperson Constable Matthew Burton.
“We recognize that this incident has deeply affected the community and that many people may be sharing information in an effort to help or support the investigation. However, sharing unconfirmed information can compromise the integrity of the investigation, influence witness accounts and hinder efforts to identify and hold those responsible accountable.”
A day later, two 17-year-old boys were charged with second degree murder. Their identities cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
OPP said the cause of the crash is still under investigation. The OPP Criminal Investigation Branch and OPP Forensic Identification Services are both involved, as well as the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
