President Donald Trump said he was meeting with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei for a late-night dinner Sunday after saying the two would discuss artificial intelligence and the U.S. race with China.
Trump said he was heading to the 10 p.m. dinner after returning to Washington from Illinois, where he attended the final day of the Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club.
“Tonight I’m having dinner with the head of Anthropic,” Trump told reporters after arriving at Joint Base Andrews. “So these are long days, but I seem to be able to handle it. … I’m having dinner at 10:00 tonight.”
Earlier Sunday, Trump told Fox News White House correspondent Aishah Hasnie that he planned to discuss AI with Amodei and framed the issue around keeping the U.S. ahead of China.
“Well, we’re going to talk about it,” Trump said. “I’m for, ‘Let’s go and let’s win.’” Trump said he believes the U.S. is “about a year, maybe a year and a half” ahead of China in AI development.
“There is nobody in third place,” Trump said. “I mean, it’s just us and China. We’re leading by quite a bit.”
The dinner came ahead of a larger White House gathering Tuesday that Trump said will bring together leaders in the AI industry.
“We have, as you know, a very big meeting on Tuesday where everybody’s coming in and that’ll be very important,” Trump said.
