Three people were killed and a fourth was critically injured after a stolen vehicle fleeing Virginia State Police crashed on an Interstate 395 exit ramp early Monday.
According to Virginia State Police, a trooper spotted a stolen vehicle around 12:45 a.m. on Stevenson Road near South Walker Street in Alexandria and attempted a traffic stop.
Police said the driver refused to stop and led troopers onto northbound I-395. Investigators said the vehicle attempted to take the Shirlington Road exit ramp at a high rate of speed, lost control, ran off the right side of the ramp and crashed into a jersey wall.
One passenger died at the scene. Three other occupants were transported to hospitals, where the driver and a second passenger later died, according to state police. A fourth occupant remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
State police said none of the occupants were wearing seat belts.
All four occupants are believed to be juveniles, police said. Their identities have not been released.
The vehicle had been reported stolen in Prince George’s County, Maryland.
The crash remains under investigation.
