LONDON (TNND) — A dual U.K.-Iranian national was arrested Thursday on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts in connection with a security incident near RAF Fairford, a U.S.-used airbase in England. British authorities have said there are strong indications Iran played a part in the incident.
Counter Terrorism Policing said the 27-year-old was taken into custody in the Borough of Westminster in London. A second man, a 26-year-old U.K. national, was “questioned under caution,” meaning the interview was recorded and could be used in any future prosecution.
Police also searched two properties in the area.
Five men — all British nationals and London residents aged 23 to 25 — were arrested Sunday on suspicion of explosives and terrorism offenses near the airbase, which has been used by American bombers to strike Iran. They were released on bail Monday as the investigation continued.
Police said they found gasoline in three vans linked to the original five suspects, but no explosives.
Vicki Evans, the senior national coordinator for counterterrorism policing, said the inquiry is “hugely complex” and investigators are examining “all possible angles — including possible foreign state involvement.”
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Wednesday there are “strong indications” that Iran played a part. Iran’s Embassy in London denied any role, calling the speculation “unfounded and malicious.”
