A Hamilton man has been arrested in connection to an alleged hit-and-run in Mississauga that killed a man in his 60s earlier this week.
The collision happened Tuesday night in the Winston Churchill Boulevard and Dundas Street West intersection just after 6 p.m.
Const. Tyler Bell with Peel Regional Police said a 1999-2005 model Chevrolet Silverado 1500 series pickup truck, two-tone in colour, was going southbound on Winston Churchill and making a right hand turn westbound onto Dundas when it struck a pedestrian who was in the crosswalk.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead on the scene. The victim has not been identified but police say he lived in the area and was believed to have been walking home.
Peel police were able to identify the vehicle by Wednesday afternoon and where it was registered. Bell said detectives went to the area Wednesday night, found the vehicle and arrested the suspect who was home at the time.
Aubrey Lawrence, 69, is facing charges of fail to remain at the scene of an accident causing death. Additional charges could be laid as the investigation is still ongoing.
Bell added they are searching for another motorist who they believe had an interaction with the suspect in a nearby Home Depot parking lot shortly after the crash.
“What we believe transpired is that a bystander, another motorist, saw the collision, followed the individual and flagged them down to a nearby parking lot where some form of interaction took place,” explained Bell. “So it looks like the person was trying to go after this [suspect], hold them accountable for the collision.”
He added it’s very important that they speak to this person as they have “invaluable firsthand accounts of what transpired.”
“This individual that’s been arrested might suggest they didn’t know they hit somebody. Now we quite likely have a member of the public who followed them, tried to flag them down and say, ‘Hey, listen, you just hit somebody. You need to go back,’” said Bell.
