After notching a hat trick and five points in the season opener, the Edmonton Oilers defenceman had three more points (one goal, two assists) before the second period was over on Thursday against the Vancouver Canucks.
With eight points on the season, Bouchard set an NHL record for most points by a defenceman in the first two games of his team’s season.
The previous record of seven was set by Harry Cameron of the Toronto Arenas way back in 1917.
Bouchard’s hat trick in Tuesday’s OT loss to the visiting Canucks was the first by a defenceman in a season opener since 1980 when Mark Howe accomplished the feat with the Hartford Whalers.
The London Knights product also became the first defenceman in NHL history to record five points in a season opener.
Bouchard, 26, is coming off a career-best offensive season with 21 goals, 74 assists for 95 points in 82 games.
