NEW YORK (WABC) — Newly unsealed police body camera video is providing a new look at the arrest of Luigi Mangione and the recovery of evidence tied to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Hours of body camera footage from Altoona police officers involved in Mangione’s arrest were released overnight by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
The footage shows officers approaching Mangione inside a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania and directing him to place his hands against a wall. Police said Mangione initially provided a fake identification before revealing his identity.
Officers then handcuffed Mangione and recovered a gun magazine from his backpack, according to authorities.
The video was at the center of a three-week evidentiary hearing held last December, during which eight Altoona police officers traveled to New York to testify about the arrest and search.
As a result of those hearings, a judge excluded from evidence the magazine recovered from Mangione’s backpack at the restaurant. However, the judge allowed prosecutors to use evidence recovered during a later search at the police station, including a firearm allegedly linked to Thompson’s killing, another magazine and handwritten notes prosecutors have described as a manifesto.
The newly released footage also shows, for the first time, Mangione being strip-searched at the police station.
Mangione pleaded guilty to federal charges in August, admitting to fatally shooting Thompson.
His state murder trial was scheduled to begin last month, but his attorneys have filed a motion seeking dismissal of the charges. They argue that prosecuting him in New York would constitute double jeopardy and violate his constitutional rights.
A judge scheduled a December hearing to determine whether the state trial will move forward.
