A West Vancouver father says he is angry and frustrated with the police’s response after he was stalked, threatened, and beaten in front of dozens of other people in a shopping mall.
On Monday evening, Kuang Shen and his family were shopping at Park Royal Mall. Shen recalls entering the parking garage to grab something from his car, and as he was heading to the elevator, he heard someone behind him.

“He said, ‘I’m going to kill you, and there’s no one to save you,’” Shen said.
“He started taunting me, and at the time I wasn’t even aware he was talking to me because he was behind me, but it was alarming because the voices were getting closer.”
Eventually, that threatening voice did catch up with Shen. In that moment, the father of two feared the worst.
“He knocked me down, kicked me to the floor, punching and kicking me repeatedly in front of people, while the bystanders there were completely horrified.”
Shen says the man had hit him around 50 or 60 times. As a result, he suffered injuries to his face, neck, hands, and hip. As well, he tells CityNews he hasn’t been able to eat solid food since.

West Vancouver Police confirmed they had arrested a suspect who was later released, pending multiple charges and a future court date.
“I was chased across the mall, criminally stalked, and issued death threats and racial slurs and brutally attacked,” Shen said.

“I think this is a direct threat to public safety.”
Police would not confirm if the suspect had a criminal history, if the assault was random, or if there were any other victims.
Meanwhile, Shen plans to press additional charges and calls the suspect’s release “a broken promise” from our justice system.
“I feel that there is no safety at all, for anybody, for any law-abiding citizen.”

While his family did not witness the attack, Shen says the psychological damage has already been done.
“My children were completely traumatized. They don’t want to go to school or go out in public.”
For Shen, the bruises will fade, but the anxiety from the attack and frustration with the suspect’s quick release may not.
