Since President Oaks became prophet last year, 13 temples have been dedicated and 18 have broken ground.2026 is on pace to become one of the biggest years for temple dedications in church history. The last of all temples announced by President Thomas S. Monson was dedicated this year.
President Dallin H. Oaks launched a new era of temple building last year when he became president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The prophet-president was ordained Oct. 14, 2025, following the death of President Russell M. Nelson on Sept. 27, 2025.
President Oaks presided over the faith’s October 2025 general conference while not yet ordained as prophet. At that conference, he surprised members by announcing a slower pace of temple announcements.
“With the large number of temples now in the very earliest phases of planning and construction, it is appropriate that we slow down the announcement of new temples,” President Oaks said last October.
“We will now move forward in providing the ordinances of the temple to members of the church throughout the world.”

Now, nearly one year since that announcement and President Oaks’ ordination as prophet, progress on the faith’s total 385 temples is accelerating.
President Nelson’s prophetic tenure was hallmarked by a significant increase in temple announcements worldwide. In its first year, President Oaks’ prophetic ministry could be characterized by an acceleration of temple building and progress.
“We are living in a glorious season of temple building,” President Oaks declared this August at his first international temple dedication, on his first ministry as prophet.
The surge in temple progress during President Oaks’ first year as prophet has put 2026 on pace to become the year with the second highest number of temple dedications in church history. The record was set in 2000, when 34 temples were dedicated.
In his first year, President Oaks has also dedicated two temples — the Burley Idaho Temple and Belo Horizonte Brazil Temple.
He and his counselors in the First Presidency have also revolutionized temple announcements by assigning church leaders to announce them locally. Under their leadership, three new temples have been announced for Portland, Maine; Marysville, Washington; and Otavalo, Ecuador.
Various factors may delay a temple’s timeline for completion, but the church is making “every effort” to construct temples expeditiously, according to a page on ChurchofJesusChrist.org.
The following is a look at temple progress in the past year, plus a status update on each of the church’s 163 temples still in process as of Oct. 1, 2026.
