JOHNSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WCYB) — UPDATE: The Tennessee Highway Patrol has released new details regarding a school bus crash involving a bus carrying Abingdon High School students Friday night.

According to a preliminary report from THP, a Subaru was driving south on Route 91 in Johnson County when it crossed the center line and struck the bus.

Both the bus and car came to a rest in a ditch according to a report.

The driver of the Subaru, 35 year-old Douglas McMillian, died at the scene according to the report.

Johnson County Schools also released a statement Saturday morning saying that they are extending their support to the Abingdon school community.

UPDATE: One person is dead following a crash involving an Abingdon High School bus and another vehicle in Johnson County on Friday night, according to authorities.

According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened in the 7000 block of Highway 91 at around 9:35 p.m.

Twenty-eight students were on the bus at the time of the crash, officials said. Three students and the bus driver were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries.

An occupant of the other vehicle died in the crash.

Washington County Public Schools confirmed to News 5 that the crash was a head-on collision.

Ballad Health says that patients were transported to Johnson City Medical Center and Johnston Memorial Hospital from the crash.

Ballad adds that incident command was also activated at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office adds that a secondary crash also occurred in connection with the initial incident. Minor injuries were reported in that crash.
