Former Canadiens defenceman Lyle Odelein, who was part of Montreal’s last Stanley Cup team in 1993, died Friday at age 58.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Odelein died of a heart attack. The native of Quill Lake, Sask., played seven seasons with the Canadiens after being selected by the team in the seventh round (141st overall) of the 1986 NHL Draft.

The Canadiens traded Odelein to the New Jersey Devils on Aug. 22, 1996, in exchange for Stéphane Richer. Odelein would play 16 seasons in the NHL and retired after playing 27 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2005-06. He also played for the Columbus Blue Jackets, Chicago Blackhawks, Florida Panthers, Phoenix Coyotes and Dallas Stars. He was the first captain in Blue Jackets history when they entered the NHL for the 2000-01 season after being claimed from the Coyotes in the expansion draft.
