Iran is linking any reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to the fulfilment of seven preconditions by the United States, Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who is also Iran’s chief negotiator, said on Sunday.
Ghalibaf said that the time for waiting and dictating one-sided demands was over, according to the state news agency IRNA. Iran’s position was completely clear and final, he said.
The strait – which is vital to the international energy trade – will remain closed until the seven conditions are met on the basis of the interim agreement of June 2026, Ghalibaf said.
Tehran said it had transmitted the list of demands to the US government via Qatar, acting as mediator.
Iran’s list of demands
According to reports, the US is being asked to end its naval blockade of Iranian ports and vessels, lift the ban on oil exports, release frozen Iranian assets, lift all sanctions imposed on the country and halt all military action against Iran and its allies in the region, including the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon.
It is considered unlikely that the US administration will fulfil all of the maximum demands in advance.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has proposed a seven-day roadmap under which the US would fulfil all preconditions before Tehran reopens the strait after seven days and begins negotiations on a comprehensive agreement.
