Here are the player ratings of Plymouth Live’s Argyle reporter Chris Errington from the Pilgrims’ 2-0 win away to Leyton Orient in League One You can give your marks too using our special widget further down this story.
Murphy Cooper 7 – Argyle limited Orient to four goal attempts on target all game and only one of them really tested Cooper, when Fin Stevens’ powerful strike midway through the second half had to be parried away. At times, Cooper’s kicking was a little wayward with the ball going straight out of play.
Joe Edwards 7 – A first league start of the season for the club captain and generally he did well up at right-back against Orient’s left-sided attacker Tony Springett, who was substituted in the 60th minute.
Mathias Ross 7 – Returned to the team because of a knee injury to Julio Pleguezuelo and was as dependable as always, not afraid to go in for physical challenges whether in the air or on the ground.
Alex Mitchell 9 STAR MAN – Spent the 2021/22 season on loan to Leyton Orient from Millwall and on his return to BetWright Stadium he had an outstanding game. It seemed like he won every header, whether it was in Argyle’s penalty area or the Orient box when he went up for set pieces.
Wes Harding 7 – Moved across to left-back with the return of Joe Edwards and Argyle’s vice-captain put in a strong defensive display as he dealt very well with Orient’s on-loan Spurs attacker Yusuf Akhamrich and also tucked in behind Alex Mitchell to make some important clearances when the ball came in from the O’s left.
Ronan Curtis 8 – Has not consistently shown the form this season that he did over the second half of last term after joining Argyle from Port Vale but this was much more like it from an all- action Curtis, especially in the second half. His first-time cross for Will Evans to head in the Pilgrims’ second goal was excellent.
Bradley Ibrahim 7 – It took the 21-year-old a little while to get up to speed as he stepped into the side becasue the on-loan Tyreeq Bakinson could not play against his parent club but gradually Ibrahim became more effective, using his athleticism to repetedly win back possession.
Harvey White 8 – At times this game became quite frenetic with periods of head tennis in and around the penalty areas and quick turnovers in possesion but when there was some conrol exerted it was usually by Argyle, and very often by White, who brought a calmness to central midfield.
Oli Irow 7 – The 20-year-old Spurs loanee will have been desperate to impress on his return to London with Argyle and he did force Orient goalkeeper Nathan Baxter into a couple of good low saves in the first half. Then, early in the second period, it was from the corner which came after Irow had a strike out behind by Idris El Mizouni that the Pilgrims took the lead through Bim Pepple.
Will Evans 8 – It was good to see the terrific workrate that Evans put in all game was rewarded with his third goal of the season, and it was a proper centre-forward’s one at that as he rose high above Orient’s Joseph Olowu to send a header into the top corner of the net. Nathan Baxter could do absolutely nothing about it.
Bim Pepple 7 – Now up to six goals for the season in all competitions. The striker said in a recent interview he wanted to start getting some tap-ins after scoring some spectacular strikes, and he got his wish against Orient. After Nathan Baxter saved an initial header from Ronan Curtis, Bradley Ibrahim prodded the ball towards goal and Pepple was alert to react first and touch it into the net.
SUBSTITUTES
Matty Sorinola 7 – With Argyle 2-0 up in the 72nd minuite and afer Joe Edwards had started a league game for the first time this season it was a good opportunity for Sorinola to take over at right-back from the club captain and he did well during the time he was on the pitch.
Caleb Watts – Was sent on to play the left-sided attacking position for Argyle as he replaced Oli Irow in the 81st minute. Watts as looked sharp in recent appearances as a substitute and it was no different this time.
Xavier Amaechi – Was part of a double substitition by the Pilgrims in the 88th minute. In his case he took over from Ronan Curtis wide on the right of midfield.
Jack MacKenzie – The left-back made his first league appearance of the season, after his return from injury in the recent EFL Trophy tie against Crystal Palace under-21s, when he was sent on for Bim Pepple for the final minutes of the match.
Substitutes (not used): James Storer, Seb Campbell, Jared Rendle.
