Montreal’s transit authority says a man died after accidentally falling onto the tracks at the Lionel-Groulx metro station Saturday morning.

The man in his 40s was unable to get back onto the platform and the incoming train could not stop in time, according to a spokesperson for the Société de transport de Montréal (STM).

Urgences-Santé confirms the death was pronounced at the scene.

An investigation into the circumstances of the death is ongoing.

The STM reminds passengers to stay behind the yellow lines on the ground and not approach the platform edges too closely.

“The STM wishes to offer its deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time,” the transit authority wrote in a statement.
