Andy Robertson hopes that he can catch Liverpool hero Kenny Dalglish’s record as the most-capped Scotland player in history, with the defender just a few games away from achieving just that.

It follows the left-back making his 100th appearance for his national team on Saturday, making history by becoming just the second Scottish player to reach triple figures.

That achievement came in the side’s 2-0 win over North Macedonia in the UEFA Nations League, with goals from Kieron Bowie and John McGinn sealing a first win for new head coach Sebastien Pocognoli. The result marked an otherwise emotional night for Robertson, who was gifted a North Macedonia jersey with his name and the number 100 on the back to mark the impressive milestone he reached.

That made the former Liverpool man just the second Scottish player to reach the 100 mark for appearances, while it also put him within touching distance of beating Dalglish‘s record of 102 appearances – which is the most-capped of any player for the national team.

“It feels unbelievable,” the defender said after the game. “To hit the 100 [appearances] mark is pretty special. It’s something that I feel as if I’ve been chasing forever.

“But since it kind of became close, I then really wanted to just get it over the line and make it happen. A hundred caps for your country is incredible. Not many people get to achieve that, and I know how lucky I am to be able to be one of the ones to do that.”

If Robertson is fit and available for selection, he will likely beat Dalglish’s record by the end of the year, with one more match left in the current international break, before the next break comes in the following month.

While the Tottenham ace has revealed that he wants to beat Dalglish’s record, he has claimed that his current focus is the landmark that he just reached.

“I think it’s just about this one [record] first. Hopefully I can [catch Dalglish] because I want to keep playing and I want to be in a Scotland jersey for years to come, which obviously results in me hopefully taking over Kenny.

“But I’m only the second male player to get to 100 caps, and I think I have to enjoy that. I think us footballers are a bit guilty of not enjoying it and not realising sometimes what you’ve achieved, so I’ve made a conscious effort to try to do that.

“I know what I’ve achieved for me and my family, and it was a really special night for us. I’ve had lots of messages, more than normal. A lot of ex-players, a lot of managers, a lot of family members and things like that, so it’s been pretty nice to be on the phone, and I’ll start getting back to them slowly but surely.”

Robertson can creep one cap closer to that record with Scotland’s final match of the current international break on Tuesday against Slovenia, while the former Liverpool man returns to league action with Tottenham sitting bottom of the division.
