An Arizona State University student whose arrest was captured in a viral video is now facing misdemeanor charges, months after the confrontation sparked widespread debate online about police use of force. The case centers on Eryn Bonner, a senior at ASU and a member of the school’s stunt team, who was involved in a late-night incident in Tempe on July 19, abc15.com reported.
According to Tempe police, officers were arresting other individuals when Bonner moved back toward the scene after being told to stay away. Video recorded by bystanders and police body cameras shows the situation quickly becoming physical. Police say Bonner interfered with officers and struck an officer during the struggle, while her attorney argues officers used unnecessary force, fox10phoenix.com said.
The video shows Bonner being pushed to the ground and restrained during the arrest. Photos released afterward showed bruising on her face. The footage spread widely on social media and led to calls for an independent review of the incident.
Maricopa County prosecutors previously declined to pursue felony charges. However, Tempe prosecutors later filed misdemeanor charges against Bonner, including disorderly conduct and interfering with police, sacbee.com said.
Bonner’s attorney, Benjamin Taylor, has criticized the decision and called for the arresting officer to be fired. Police officials have defended the officers’ actions and said the full incident is being reviewed. The Tempe Police Department says an internal investigation remains ongoing and that all available evidence will be examined before final conclusions are reached.
