That’s debatable. The president seems to prize loyalty above all and punishes dissenters, even close allies. Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) appeared to get doxxed by Trump for opposing his all-year daylight saving time push. The president even expects obedience from his U.S. Supreme Court appointees.
But Maher insisted to “GPS” host Fareed Zakaria that Trump ultimately takes a dim view of suck-ups.
The comedian noted that the president’s opinions waver and people can change his mind.
“Everything is done by, ‘People are saying,’ so be one of the people saying,” Maher explained. “He needs more people like me talking to him, not less. I think he actually doesn’t like the fact that all he has around him are boring ass kissers. He’s that guy who wants you to kiss his ass, but then he doesn’t respect you when you do.”
Even after Trump reportedly tried to prevent him from receiving the Mark Twain Prize and dissed him recently (while saying he liked Maher), the “Real Time” host said he’d still accept a dinner invitation.
“I’d rather be involved,” he said. “I’d rather have the conversation going. I still want to talk to him… Not talking guarantees nothing.”
