The reigning Super Bowl champions aren’t adding veteran help to their running back room after all.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Seattle Seahawks “decided not to” sign Joe Mixon to their practice squad after he underwent a physical.
ESPN’s Brady Henderson reported the Seahawks now plan to sign running back Robert Henry Jr. off the Washington Commanders’ practice squad.
Running back depth has become an area of concern for the Seahawks in the early going this season. Most notably, rookie Jadarian Price will miss at least four games on IR because of a chest injury.
“This is just what happens in football. Unfortunately, injuries happen,” head coach Mike Macdonald told reporters. “He can’t control these things. He’s done everything we’ve asked him to do since he got here. He’s had a great attitude. He’s been a great teammate. He has a great future. He’s going to play great football for us when he comes back, whenever that is … It’s just unfortunate.”
As for Zach Charbonnet, he is yet to play this season as he recovers from a torn ACL. However, Seattle opened his 21-day practice window on Thursday, suggesting he could be nearing his return.
With both of them out for Sunday’s win over the Los Angeles Chargers, Emanuel Wilson thrived in the primary running back role. He finished with 21 carries for 81 yards and one touchdown to go with three catches for 39 yards and another score.
Backup George Holani tallied seven carries for 18 yards.
Mixon played seven seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals and surpassed the 1,000-yard mark on the ground four times, including when he was a Pro Bowler in 2021. He was also a Pro Bowler in 2024 with the Texans when he ran for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns.
The 30-year-old missed the 2025 campaign because of a foot injury. Houston released him in March.
