A incident near Kingsway Park Public School affected transportation home for some students.
THUNDER BAY — Police say no injuries were reported in a weapons incident near a Westfort-area elementary school on Tuesday.
Officers were dispatched to a weapons call from a Tarbutt Street South location at 2:55 p.m., according to a spokesperson for the Thunder Bay Police Service.
Police activity was concentrated around a home near the corner of Tarbutt Street South and Christina Street East, where at least five police vehicles were seen.
Some officers were carrying rifles.
Police were speaking to someone in a camper parked outside the residence.
Police said there was no threat to public safety.
Officers were also observed outside Kingsway Park Public School but the spokesperson confirmed the incident did not occur at the school.
The Lakehead Public School Board alerted parents to the police presence in an email issued just after 3:30 p.m.
Students who normally walk home from school via Tarbutt Street South were prevented from taking that route, according to the email, and impacted families would be contacted directly to make other arrangements.
“While there is no threat to the school, students will not be able to walk that way at the end of the day,” the email stated.
An investigation is ongoing, said police, and further information will be provided as it becomes available.
At 4:50 p.m. police reported the situation was “resolved” but no other details were disclosed.
