Montreal has no role to play in a possible referendum on Quebec’s independence, Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada said Tuesday following the Parti Québécois election victory.
Speaking to reporters at city hall, Martinez Ferrada said the question of Quebec’s future within Canada isn’t a municipal matter.
“Montreal doesn’t have a role in that,” she said when asked how the city would navigate a possible referendum. “Quebec is a conversation that needs to be decided at the National Assembly, and we will respect the National Assembly’s decision.”
