Bill O’Reilly said President Donald Trump needs to find a way to end the Iran war ASAP because the lingering conflict is threatening to “kill” his legacy.

The former Fox News star joined Chris Cuomo’s NewsNation show on Tuesday night to talk about the war, one week after he headed to the White House and discussed it face-to-face with the president. O’Reilly said he didn’t want to “violate any confidence,” but he said he was blunt with Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio: The Iran war is not very popular with the American public.

“I don’t think Iran is going particularly well, and all the polls show that,” O’Reilly said. “But it’s not a matter of him doing anything wrong, it’s a matter of, how are you going to wrap it up? Because this is killing the Republican Party in the polling, and you may lose Congress, because Americans are tired of it.”

O’Reilly said voters will likely make the GOP pay for their gas and food prices going up, unless Trump can get the war over with. He then warned Trump is in danger of being linked to an unpopular war forever, much like ex-President George W. Bush is historically tied to the Iraq War.

“Your legacy will be like Bush the younger. Bush the younger, did a fairly good job, but the Iraq War killed his legacy, and the Iranian situation could kill Trump’s legacy, and he cares about that very much,” O’Reilly said.

He added that, although the war isn’t a hit with the American public, he believed it took “a lot of guts” for Trump to launch it. He said the president was right to launch the war because Iran was run by theocratic nut jobs who were dead set on getting a nuclear weapon; he said if citizens “don’t understand” that, they don’t understand anything.
