Philadelphia Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet has been searching the wilderness for some consistent lines that he could put out and lead to somewhat success. But with the team now with a 0-2-2 record to start the season, it appears that he is already hitting the panic button and going for the nuclear option when it comes to the lineup the Flyers will put on the ice.
Ahead of Thursday night’s matchup against the Senators in Ottawa, Tocchet unveiled a lineup that provided honest-to-God shock. Throughout the first four games, he’s tinkered here and there, keeping some pairings together and changing the other winger or looking for some chemistry to build or put whichever forward is playing well higher up the lineup to give them more of an opportunity. It has led to some frustration and it looked like the Flyers coach was struggling.
Now, there is no doubt that he spent the majority of his time traveling from Tampa to Ottawa thinking about new combinations and just completely re-worked the entire team. This is starting to feel desperate, but it’s also because the Flyers are exactly that. They need to get back on track and this is maybe the way — to set the previous lineup sheet on fire and start anew.
Flyers unveil a whole new lineup and it’s shocking
I’ve written enough to not get to what really matters. According to The Inquirer’s Gabriela Carroll this is what the Flyers coaching staff have conjured up ahead of Thursday’s game against the Senators:
Travis Konecny — Sean Couturier — Porter Martone
Trevor Zegras — Christian Dvorak — Owen Tippett
Tyson Foerster — Denver Barkey — Matvei Michkov
Michael Bunting — Noah Cates — Noel Acciari
Okay! Wow! Ah!
Sean Couturier is back as the Flyers’ first-line center. That’s right. We’re really trying to think of what works right now. Everything before this has been thrown out the window. Couturier has been playing fine, but it’s largely because he’s been the team’s fourth-line center for the last several months and knows his role. Now that he’s paired up with Travis Konecny again and Porter Martone, there is an expectation for offense and it will be a mystery to see if it works or not.
Trevor Zegras is back on the wing and it’s possibly the biggest trigger Tocchet could have pulled. He is much more of an offensive weapon on the flank than down the middle, but now the center depth is lacking. He reunites with Christian Dvorak — those two did play well together to start last season — and speedster Owen Tippett is on the other flank as his partnership with Zegras remains in-tact.
Denver Barkey is getting a look at center in his second game since coming back from injury, and it’s an interesting call. Obviously with Zegras on the wing, they need another pivot and Tocchet seemed to be completely fine with him playing there during the playoffs, when they also had a similar attempt to just get something working. And now Barkey gets to have two offensive weapons in Tyson Foerster and Matvei Michkov on his wings. This line could at least be interesting and is probably the one where we could see something working and the trio sticking together beyond this short-sighted panic.
And finally, the new guy Michael Bunting is officially making his debut on the fourth line next to Noah Cates and Noel Acciari. Cates’ move down to the fourth line makes sense since he hasn’t really been all that good and now all he has to do is worry about the other team and limiting their chances.
It’s a forward group that feels foreign as players are in places we haven’t seen in what feels like forever. We’ll see if it can maybe get them up to 15 or 16 shots on goal Thursday.
The Flyers blue line is undergoing an experiment
Moving on to the blue line and the creativity is obviously limited since there’s only so much you can do — especially with Rasmus Ristolainen still working back from his injury — but these pairings certainly seem like a disaster is waiting for us.
Travis Sanheim — Jamie Drysdale
Cam York — David Jiricek
Nick Seeler — Simon Benoit
Travis Sanheim and Jamie Drysdale as a pairing is perfectly fine. It’s a combination you hope to see when Ristolainen most likely departs before next season and Drysdale takes the step to be a top-pairing player. We don’t want to judge their potential long-term future based on one game, but they will certainly be taking the brunt of the damage against the Senators.
Cam York and David Jiricek both had notable gaffs on Monday night in Tampa. York’s poor decision making on breakouts and Jiricek blindly passing the puck to the other team to then be turnstiled in horrific fashion, has notably lowered both of their stock among the Flyers fan base. So, in the very next game we get to see them play next to one another! We wonder how that will turn out.
Nick Seeler and Simon Benoit are going to try out there but most likely they will be unable to exit the zone with any sense of cleanliness and they’re going to rack up the blocked shot counter. Maybe one of them will get in a fight tonight.
The Flyers’ defense was already limited and now we’re worried that a whole lot of them overperformed last season because this is a blue line that does not look like it will lead to a whole lot of success. It doesn’t look like a blue line that could support any forward group in the NHL and these forwards need support or they might drown.
Joseph Woll will be starting tonight. We are praying for his safety and sanity.
A new look on the power play too
Rick Tocchet spoke about how he wants to commit to his power-play units to start the season and had an idea that the new strategy could take some time to work but they will remain patient. Well, a terrible 0-2-2 start has now had him give up on the existing units in some fashion.

Jiříček-Zegras-Foerster-Michkov-Konecny
Drysdale-Tippett-Martone-Barkey-Bunting

David Jiricek will be now quarterbacking the top power-play unit and while Konecny took Martone’s spot earlier, it is now feeling much more etched into stone. The other three forwards are sticking around and it sure seems like Zegras is going to be the centerman on the top unit, which is interesting but it’s not like Dvorak or Couturier would rescue this man advantage.
Denver Barkey is also the serving centerman on the second unit, taking over from Noah Cates. Bunting is going to be already on the power play for his debut, as Drysdale gets demoted and Tippett and Martone are there also.
There is some consistency with these units, since it should be the same concept and the nuclear option is separating Zegras and Michkov from one another. That button has not been pushed yet.
Will these changes work? No one knows. But, it is certainly better than trotting out the same four lines from their miserable start. Consistency and patience would have been nice, but if something needs to be changed then so be it. It’s just hard to find out anything of value if the Flyers keep on getting caved in and considering the hot start the Senators have had, that might just happen again.
