Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Friday stressed the continued implementation of deals reached during a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) earlier this year.

A statement by Azerbaijan’s presidency on talks in the port city of Turkmenbashi in western Turkmenistan, on the sidelines of a leaders’ summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), said both presidents acknowledged their previous meetings and telephone calls with satisfaction and noted the recent visit of an Azerbaijani delegation to Iran.

“President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized the historic ties of friendship and kinship between the two countries, once again stating that Iran highly appreciated Azerbaijan’s position as a friendly and good neighbor during the events in Iran,” said the statement.

It said Aliyev also touched on Iran’s participation in the Commonwealth of Independent States Plus format as a non-member state for the first time, while both sides expressed satisfaction that work on implementing the Aghband–Kelaleh project had reached its final stage.

“During the conversation, they noted that the relevant bodies of both countries were continuing efforts to implement the issues discussed at the previous meeting of the heads of state in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, concerning the development of bilateral cooperation,” it added.

Both leaders arrived Thursday in Turkmenistan to take part in CIS events in the Avaza National Tourist Zone, and to attend a Caspian environment summit involving the presidents of all five Caspian littoral states.

Prior to Friday’s meeting, the two presidents last held in-person talks on Aug. 31 on the sidelines of the SCO summit in the Kyrgyz capital.
