Russian President Vladimir Putin conveyed Iran’s position on a possible agreement to end the war with the United States during a telephone conversation with President Donald Trump on Friday, the Kremlin disclosed Saturday.
The communication followed Putin’s meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Turkmenistan, where the Russian leader expressed a willingness to help negotiate an end to the conflict, now in its eighth month.
“In coordination with the Iranian president, Putin conveyed the Iranian side’s views on a possible resolution to the conflict to Trump,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, according to Russia’s state-run RIA news agency.
Moscow did not disclose the terms Tehran was proposing or provide details about Trump’s response to the message.
Putin met with Pezeshkian during a summit in Turkmenistan earlier this week, discussing prospects for a diplomatic settlement and Russia’s potential role in facilitating negotiations.
According to Russia’s Interfax news agency, Peskov said Putin held two meetings with Pezeshkian and informed the Iranian leader in advance of his planned telephone conversation with Trump.
The Kremlin’s announcement comes amid stalled negotiations between Washington and Tehran over a war that began with U.S. and Israeli military strikes against Iran in February.
The two countries reached a memorandum of understanding in June outlining a potential framework for ending the conflict. That arrangement failed to produce a lasting settlement, however, and Iranian attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz were followed by renewed U.S. military operations.
Subsequent indirect negotiations, including discussions held around the United Nations General Assembly in September, failed to produce a breakthrough.
Iran has sought an end to the U.S. naval blockade as part of a potential ceasefire, while Washington has maintained economic and military pressure on Tehran.
Pezeshkian said Thursday that Iran and the United States had exchanged proposals through intermediaries and that Tehran was revising its response before returning it to mediators.
