A US fighter jet has fired on a commercial cargo vessel in the Gulf of Oman after its crew allegedly ignored repeated warnings and tried to break through the ongoing American naval blockade of Iran.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the strike occurred on October 10, when a fighter jet hit the stern of the Panama-flagged M/V Ocean Molica — also known as the “Arika Sun” — with a precision-guided munition.
The strike completely destroyed the ship’s propulsion system, leaving it stranded in the water. CENTCOM confirmed no crew members were harmed in the attack.
According to the US military, the large cargo vessel had departed from an Iranian port and was attempting to pass through regional waters when it was intercepted.
Meanwhile, Russia and Ukraine have reached and breached an energy ceasefire days after Mr Trump roiled Kyiv by unveiling a diesel purchasing deal with Moscow.
“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine,” Mr Trump posted on Truth Social on Sunday.
“Both parties have agreed. Do not break it! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
Kyiv had been carrying out strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, particularly refineries, in retaliation for similar attacks the Kremlin has carried out in Ukraine.
However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the Axios digital news outlet on Sunday that the ceasefire announcement “was news for me” but he would accept it whenever it begins.
“If Russians agree to an energy ceasefire Ukraine will agree. If president Trump negotiated it with Putin – please tell us when the ceasefire begins – we are ready and we will accept it,” Mr Zelensky said.
