PICO-UNION, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Two children under the age of 10 were killed in a shooting in Los Angeles’ Pico-Union neighborhood Sunday after their father allegedly opened fire on them before turning the gun on himself, according to police.

The shooting occurred just before 1 p.m. near Venice Boulevard and Catalina Street, the Los Angeles Police Department said. The father reportedly shot his 10-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son before turning the gun on himself, according to police.

The children were taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Police said the gunman, described as a Hispanic man between 30 and 40 years old, is in custody while receiving treatment at a hospital. His condition was not immediately available.

Police said no additional suspects were being sought and there was no ongoing threat to the community.

Citizen App video captured the chaotic aftermath of the shooting. One witness said, “Oh my God I was on the bus when it happened.”

Another witness in the video said, “He shot himself in the head. He shot himself in the head.”

The deaths left neighbors shaken.

“I’m really, really sad for them. I have family too. I don’t want anything bad to happen to them,” one community member said.

AIR7 video showed multiple police and Los Angeles Fire Department vehicles at the scene, which was cordoned off with yellow police tape.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
