Steven Schumacher gave an update on the defender’s fitness after he missed the last three games through injury.

The centre-back was absent for victories against Cardiff City and Norwich City before the international break and also sat out the weekend’s defeat at home to Stoke City.

But Schumacher is looking forward to welcoming him back at the back end of this week, with the possibility of having him available for selection for Boro’s visit on Friday, October 23.

He explained: “Chris is planning on being on part of training on Thursday and Friday.

“I don’t know whether that will mean he can do all of the session, it’ll be modified for the first couple of days, then the week after, he’ll be in full-contact training.

“He could potentially be available for the Boro game, after Southampton.”

Forino had been one of Bolton’s brightest performers in the opening few weeks of the season but Schumacher said his injury had flared up midway through the international break.

“It is a bit of a frustrating one for him,” the head coach said. “It was a small, minor groin strain that he got after the West Ham game.

“He had a couple of weeks to let it settle down, he trained throughout the international break but didn’t manage to play the Motherwell game because it had flared up again.

“It is just about managing it, and trying to get it right, because he proved early on in the season that he’s a good player, and was important for us, so the quicker we get him back on the training pitch, the better.”

Wanderers have no new injury issues for the trip to Wolves on Tuesday night but Schumacher says he could make changes with another away trip to Southampton to follow on Saturday.

“We’re in a three-game week, so you have to try and make sure that when you’re going through fixtures like this, against really good opposition, you just give yourself the best chance that you can to try and get a result,” he said.

“Now, whether that means we decide to make changes on Tuesday night or save it until Saturday to make changes, you’ll find out. But, yeah, we’ve got a squad that we think everybody can play and contribute, so once we select a team, it’ll be done for a reason. Hopefully we get the decisions right.”
