President Donald Trump waved away fears that Russia and China have been aiding Iran, dismissing such claims in a late-night Truth Social post as coming from “Radical Left Morons and Lunatics.”
Trump’s apparent confidence came with a caveat, though.
Posting to his own social media platform just before 11 p.m. on Monday, Trump wrote:
I see so many comments from the Radical Left Morons and Lunatics that China and Russia are helping the “wonderful” Islamic Republic of Iran. If they are, it’s at a very low level, but I don’t believe they are at all. They have too much to lose, and we would know about it, and know about it very fast! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP
The assertion comes days after Russian dictator Vladimir Putin communicated Iran’s position on a potential peace deal in a phone call to Trump, after which the American president declared the United States would buy diesel fuel from Russia despite sanctions in a bid to lower prices.
The deal has sparked bipartisan outrage.
The war in Iran has dragged on for more than seven months and cost at least 21 American service members their lives. The conflict began on Feb. 28 with joint airstrikes on Iran by the United States and Israel.
Trump has repeatedly insisted the conflict with Iran — which has been unpopular at home and dragged on Republicans in recent polls — will end after the looming midterm elections, and boasted time and again that Iran’s military has been destroyed.
Reports have continued to emerge that despite months of attacks by the United States, Iran has retained its military capabilities.
Iran has plenty of ballistic missiles and can speedily ramp up its stockpile, even after repeated bombing by the United States, anonymous Western officials told Bloomberg last week.
