SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – The suspect charged in the fatal shooting of sheriff’s deputy Katherine Frank faces three counts of attempted first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer.
Court documents filed Oct. 10 say officers were called to 39-year-old Brandon John Oetken’s home Friday, Oct. 9, to serve a mental illness hold. Three officers, including Frank, responded. A witness told investigators that Oetken recognized them as police.
The documents say Oetken retreated into the home while speaking with officers. They followed to maintain contact. As the officers stood close together in the entryway, Oetken allegedly produced a handgun and pointed it at them.
As officers retreated, Oetken allegedly fired, striking Frank at close range. Another officer returned fire, striking Oetken multiple times.
According to the court documents, DCI agents reviewed police body-camera footage.
