A statewide ban on skill games in stores, restaurants, and other businesses went into effect overnight in Pennsylvania, following a state Supreme Court ruling that deemed the games illegal outside of casinos.

The June 2026 ruling classified skill games as slot machines, requiring them to follow the state’s gambling guidelines.

The court granted a 120-day grace period to allow lawmakers time to regulate the games, but the General Assembly failed to reach an agreement.

According to state police, enforcement measures include seizing and forfeiting the machines and associated equipment, confiscating proceeds from their operation, and filing criminal charges when deemed appropriate.

The effect in Western Pennsylvania

Businesses in Western Pennsylvania are anticipating fallout ranging from closures and unemployment to mortgage failures.

Many owners Pittsburgh Action News 4 spoke with are now uncertain about how they will replace the revenue that helped sustain their operations.

“It’s a good support system to help us do things not only to keep this club running, but also to help with the social hall, fire department, and it covers the utilities for the whole building,” said Michael Saunders, president of Bovard Fire Hall.

Other businesses have said they may need to raise prices and rental fees to make up for the loss, calling the ban detrimental to the state of Pennsylvania.
