WASHINGTON — The United States is considering using a so-called “mother of all bombs” as part of new strike plans in the war in Iran.
Military sources told CNN that the plans are in place in case President Trump decides to resume combat operations, either before or after the midterm elections.
What is the MOAB
The GBU-43-B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb, or MOAB, is the most powerful non-nuclear bomb in the U.S. arsenal.
Using it for the first time in the war with Iran would be a notable escalation.
It has the capability of destroying an area equal to nine city blocks.
Concerns over effectiveness and casualties
However, there are concerns it likely lacks the capability to penetrate deep enough to destroy suspected nuclear facilities.
The big blast radius also raises concerns about civilian casualties.
White House response
When asked about possible military plans in Iran, a White House official told CNN that the president is keeping all options on the table.
Trump is facing pressure to bring an end to the deeply unpopular war, as Republicans brace for potential political backlash from voters in the midterm elections.
There is little indication the two countries are close to a negotiated resolution after more than six months of U.S. bombing.
