Figueroa vs Gonzalez: we go to the scorecards

I think that turned into a very tight fight.

I had it 113-115 in favour of Joet Gonzalez.

But there were some rounds that could have gone either way earlier in the contest.

Figueroa vs Gonzalez: Round 12

Gonzalez is cut on the lip – his face looks a mess.

Figueroa runs to the centre of the ring to start his work and he is starting well, landing to the body.

A knockdown here will make things interesting.

Gonzalez makes it hard though, working well in tight and landing some of those body shots.

Figueroa swings to the head, swings hard but Gonzalez cuffs those blows away.

More shots from Figueroa.

Blood is pouring down the side of Gonzalez’s face.

Gonzalez looks like he’s been hit by a truck – that face is swelling horribly.

Figueroa simply has to step on the gas – I think he needs a knockdown here.

They tangle in tight again in the middle of the ring.

Figueroa works some shots to the body but there’s not enough power.

THERE’S THE POWER THOUGH! That woke Gonzalez up, a solid straight right into the chin of Gonzalez.

Up to the head and then down to the body from Figueroa! This is so much better!

Gonzalez fights back but it’s Figueroa who is on top.

Gonzalez looks to the body and is landing plenty but the sting has gone out of those shots now.

Wow, that eye of Gonzalez is looking nasty now, really swelling up and weeping blood as his whole brow looks to swell.

Figueroa vs Gonzalez: Round 9

I can’t see a stoppage in this one, but Gonzalez is landing so hard to the body that Figueroa has to be feeling it.

Again they come in close, Gonzalez swings hard, catches Figueroa on the head and then gets caught on the body too.

Gonzalez is in so close, that right shoulder will have an imprint of Figueroa’s face on it for a week at this rate.

Both men work in tight to the body but Gonzalez’s shots are clearly landing with more power, shaking the flesh of Figueroa.

BANG! Great shot from Gonzalez! He lands so hard to the head, a shower of sweat flying through the air with a beautiful right to the chin.

Figueroa comes back with a couple of decent shots but nothing compared to the one he just ate.

Figueroa gets a very good left hook in right on the bell but I don’t think it was enough to take the round.

Gonzalez with a good body shot again, a looping left hook.

Figueroa got an uppercut there but Gonzalez landed two serious body shots and then comboed with an upper cut of his own in tight.

The shoulders and elbows are doing a lot of work as this fight goes on.

There is blood from the eye of Gonzalez but it doesn’t seem to be bothering him too much.

Good body shots from Figueroa but then Gonzalez lands hard himself, a really good, eyecatching response from the smaller American.

Figueroa vs Gonzalez: Round 7

Good body flurry from Gonzalez.

They come in close and, despite some interference from the host broadcaster, you can see the body shots staccatoing into the ribs of Figueroa.

Figueroa comes back but so does Gonzalez, who is working hard in there.

Figueroa is against the ropes, Gonzalez landing with real venom to the body.  Several shots land and land with real intent to the prone belly of Figueroa.

Great right down the pipe from Gonzalez.

Figueroa taps away at the head of Gonzalez, who has blocked most of what’s coming his way.

Both men lean in with their heads, Figueroa working to the body and then Gonzalez coming back with more accuracy.

Figueroa just seems to be pawing at Gonzalez a bit, no bite to the punches – the same cannot be said of what’s coming back his way.

Another tight round but I think Gonzalez edged it – I have him up by three.

Figueroa vs Gonzalez: Round 6

“Fight fire with fire … to hard to the body and finish to the head,” says the Figueroa corner.

Figueroa comes in and works the body straight away but there’s nothing to finish up top with and they clinch.

Good right from Figueroa lands and just rocks the head of Gonzalez.

They come back in again, tight, compact fighting.

These guys don’t need a ring, just throw them in a phone box and we’d have the same outcome.

Good body work from Figueroa, high and low, that’s good fighting.

Gonzalez lands with power to the body and then the pair scrimmage like two undersized, underdressed NRL linemen, shoulder to shoulder and head.

But Figueroa comes back – this is a good round, both men throwing their hands.

Solid body from Figueroa.

And a good finish from Figueroa to perhaps steal a tight round.

It’s all close quarters stuff and Gonzalez is doing better in there.

There’s an upper cut from Figueroa.

Gonzalez comes in with a jab to the belly.

Figueroa needs separation. Needs distance.

Good flurry from Gonzalez to end the round.

Figueroa vs Gonzalez: Round 2

There are 12 rounds in this one, so a long way to go as Gonzalez lands a good jab top the body.

Good contest as they come in close and then Gonzalez unleashes with a series of blows to the body. Great action from the man in the solver and blue shorts – good combinations.

Figueroa clips Gonzalez on the head.

Upper cut from Figueroa, who is too close really – the commentators are talking about it and he’s taking away his reach advantage by burrowing in with his head.

We’ve just been shown a replay of Figueroa punching himself in the head with an upper cut – that’s how close he’s getting.

Gonzalez lands with a solid shot to the body.

AND THEN A HOOK! Great stuff.

Gonzalez with an upper cut now – this is good from Gonzalez.

Good right hook again from Gonzalez.

Some decent body shots forces Gonzalez against the ropes.

Lovely shot from Figueroa, all body work.

Gonzalez comes back with some shots but there is a clear mismatch here early on.

Long, rangy jab from Figueroa, the taller man, there.

The referee steps in to separate the pair but it’s a short lived tangle.

Figueroa comes forward behind the jab and then a solid right – it’s comfortable stuff at the moment for the tall man in the black trunks.

Good hook from Gonzalez! That’s better! He lands a few to the body and then spins Figueroa to the ropes after an uppercut.

But Figueroa comes back with some more power shots and that ends the round.

A good one first up.

Who next for Usyk?

Usyk’s performance is mind boggling. 24-0 record , all 4 belts, easy victory tonight! Any idea who his next challenger might be ? Who would be stupid enough?

– Phillip

(Getty Images)

Great question, Phillip.

Immediately, Usyk said that “nothing” is next.

But when he was pushed, he said there were options.

“Maybe, we have three choices, [Fury], Derek Chisora and Anthony Joshua. Maybe Joseph Parker.

“Listen, I cannot now say because I want to go back home.”

I wouldn’t hate seeing Joseph Parker have a go at him – I think the New Zealander has earned another shot.

But it’s a tough one.

You’d have to say that Usyk can comfortably go down as one of the all time greats.

‘Never kick the small man down’: Tszyu ready for Vegas return

Tim Tszyu spoke to ABC Sport before he left for the USA.

He was calm, relaxed and very philosophical about what had gone down before, and what he had in store awaiting him in Las Vegas, and what he needed to do to  win back his title.

“I think, in life, every lesson you learn is from hard failures, from hard situations that helps you grow as a person,” he said.

“That gash unfortunately made me lose, but it turned me into a different person.”
